The grappling anchor has evolved to what you see today. The shank now consists of a solid metal bar and the hooks have a varying diameter according to the required weight. The shape and length of the bend of the anchor is of great significance. Firstly, it hooks much easier than the previous design and secondly it straightens when required. The shank has an eye in between the hooks where the chain is attached as well as an eye at the stem of the shank where the weak link is attached. The weak link at the end of the shank is to be used to attach the chain via a piece of copper wire (diameter varies according to requirement). Nylon or string is not recommended for this use. The copper wire is to be twisted according to the weight of the craft and prevailing weather conditions. The goal is to have the anchor break free when required.

The Daan Mud and Sand Anchor has an excellent holding ability; which has always been associated with amongst others the “Dan Forth”. The shank has been modified with a square bar bent double to create a slot in the middle of the shank. This serves a double purpose it increases the strength of the shank and it allows for easy retrieval. When retrieving the anchor, move the boat in the opposite direction. You will find that the shackle at the end of your chain slides along the shank towards the head of the anchor thus pulling the anchor in reverse, out of almost any situation. The shank increases the recovery rate considerably when compared to the old, solid shank system. All Daan Anchors have a hot dipped galvanised coating ensuring lasting protection.
